The title says it all. This is an uplifting illustrated text on the successes of science. Lauren Pecorino, principal lecturer in cancer biology at the University of Greenwich in London, has written extensively on the molecular biology of cancer and cancer therapeutics.
She opens up new perspectives on cancer, explaining why more and more people are surviving the disease that affects one in three people in the UK during their lifetime. This is a well-written, accessible and serious book that describes the basics of cancer and its treatment. The tone is uplifting, positive and upbeat. It looks at carcinogens – how they work and our defences against them – finding a cure for leukaemia and a vaccine against cervical cancer.
It offers recommendations on reducing the risk of contracting cancer, how to face it and how to live life well after surviving the treatment. There is a discussion on quitting smoking, eating well and taking regular exercise, as well as screenings and vaccination, and a final chapter on where we go from here.
I recommend this book to everyone working in health care and all those wanting to know more about cancer and finding a cure.
