Review

This is an excellent book for people who are starting a mentorship course or in need of a refresher. Mentorship training can be overwhelming, especially at the beginning when confronted with literature and guidelines that seem divorced from the clinical area.

Using the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements to define and introduce each chapter, this is a concise and practical guide. It is simple to navigate and ideal to dip into for something specific, as well as being a good overall introduction.

This book covers every aspect of the mentoring role, with practical questions at the end of each chapter connecting the concepts to practice. The accompanying ‘sample answers’ are particularly helpful. They allow time for reflection, and ground the book in the ward environment.

I also recommend this book to those who have been mentoring for some time. It will be effective in reviewing practice, especially as the case studies can sometimes seem all too real.
